Being a women in Nepal
Are the women in these paintings, the survivors of bygone days ? In the valley of Kathmandu, in Bhaktapur, in Bungamati…,
this ancestral way of life is still present, for in Nepalese culture, apart from chatting in the neighbourhood, the women
do not have a place beyond the household. They try to fill each moment of their day usefully, coping with all the chores,
such as housework, weaving, looking after the family, both old and young... And this way of life remains unquestioned.
In these conditions, do they have any time left for themselves, their own fulfilment and freedom ?
The world is changing. The times are changing and young women are trying to evolve differently, to improve their standard of
education and their professional status.
However, to fulfil the dreams of founding a family, while also nursing new aspirations, is a difficult task in a country where
there is so much poverty.
Should this traditional way of life continue to go unchallenged ? To my mind, it would be preferable to retain the positive aspects
of our traditions and get rid of the negative factors, rather than throw it all to the wind.
Whatever should happen, I thank my parents for enabling me to become what I am, through the education I received. I hope every women
will have the right to her own aspirations, her own choice of lifestyle.
Here, every one talks about women’s rights, but, in truth, there is a need for human rights in general.
